Understanding Cold Climate Standards
Cold climate heat pump performance is measured at 5°F (-15°C) outdoor temperature, where traditional heat pumps lose significant efficiency. The COP (Coefficient of Performance) indicates how efficiently the unit converts electricity to heat.
COP Thresholds
- COP ≥ 1.75: Basic cold climate capability (NEEP)
- COP ≥ 2.0: High-performance cold climate
- COP ≥ 2.4: DOE CCHP for units ≤48k BTU
- COP ≥ 2.1: DOE CCHP for units >48k BTU
DOE CCHP Challenge
- Full compliance requires:
- COP ≥ 2.4 (≤48k BTU) or 2.1 (>48k BTU)
- 100% capacity ratio (full output at 5°F)
- HSPF2 ≥ 8.5, GWP ≤ 750 refrigerant
