Does My Heat Pump Brand Qualify? Finding the Right QMID for Bryant, Goodman, and Others

    January 15, 2025
    4 min read

You're filling out Form 5695 for your heat pump tax credit. You know you need a QMID. You search for your brand name in the IRS database.

    Nothing comes up.

    Welcome to HVAC Brand Confusion

The name on your equipment often doesn't match the manufacturer registered with the IRS. Major HVAC manufacturers own multiple brands, and the IRS only tracks parent company QMIDs.

    The Brand Ownership Problem

Major HVAC manufacturers own multiple brands. When you search for "Bryant," you won't find it because Bryant is owned by Carrier. Carrier's QMID applies to all their brands.

This causes real problems at tax time. People search for their brand, find nothing, and either skip the credit or enter incorrect information. Neither is a good outcome.

    Key Insight

    • Carrier owns Bryant, Heil, Payne, Tempstar, and more
    • Daikin owns Goodman and Amana
    • Trane owns American Standard
    • Search by parent manufacturer, not brand name

    Who Owns What

    Carrier Global

Carrier manufactures equipment under several brand names:

    • Bryant (premium residential)
    • Heil (value residential)
    • Day & Night (value brand)
    • Payne (entry-level)
    • Tempstar (retail/contractor)
    • Comfortmaker (contractor)

All these brands use Carrier's QMID. If you have any of these brands, look up Carrier in our QMID directory.

    Daikin Industries

Daikin is the world's largest HVAC manufacturer. They own:

    • Goodman (popular value brand)
    • Amana (residential)
    • Daikin (premium systems)

Goodman and Amana equipment uses Daikin's QMID. These are among the most common brands in US residential installations.

    Trane Technologies

Trane operates under two main brands:

    • Trane (premium)
    • American Standard (premium)

    Both use Trane Technologies' QMID.

    Lennox International

    Lennox owns several brands:

    • Lennox (premium)
    • Armstrong Air (mid-tier)
    • Ducane (value)

    All fall under Lennox's QMID.

    Johnson Controls

    Johnson Controls manufactures:

    • York (residential and commercial)
    • Coleman (residential)
    • Luxaire (residential)
    • Champion (residential)

Use Johnson Controls' QMID for all these brands.

    Rheem Manufacturing

    Rheem and its brands:

    • Rheem (residential)
    • Ruud (contractor channel)

    Both use Rheem's QMID.

    Nortek Global HVAC

    Nortek brands include:

    • Frigidaire (residential)
    • Maytag (residential)
    • Westinghouse (residential)
    • Broan-NuTone (ventilation)

These use Nortek's QMID, though Nortek has had ownership changes, so verify current registration.

Why This Matters for Your Tax Credit

    Avoid IRS Issues

The IRS checks the QMID against their registered manufacturer list. If you enter the wrong code, your claim could be flagged or rejected.

    Here's what happens:

    1. You claim the 25C credit with an incorrect or missing QMID
    2. IRS systems can't match your claim to a registered manufacturer
    3. Your return may be delayed or flagged for review
    4. You might receive a notice requesting clarification

Getting it right the first time saves headaches.

    How to Verify

    1

    Find Your Brand Name

Look on your equipment nameplate or invoice for the brand name.

    2

    Identify Parent Manufacturer

Use the table above or our QMID directory to find the parent company.

    3

    Look Up the QMID

Search for the manufacturer's QMID in the IRS database or our directory.

    4

    Verify It's Current

Confirm the QMID is current. Manufacturers occasionally update their registrations.

    When Brand Names Match

Some manufacturers sell under their own name:

    • Mitsubishi Electric (ductless systems)
    • Fujitsu General (ductless systems)
    • LG Electronics (ductless systems)
    • Bosch (heat pumps and tankless)
    • Navien (tankless water heaters)

For these, search the manufacturer name directly in our QMID directory.
