About Vermont Casting
Vermont Castings is an American manufacturer of cast iron wood stoves, pellet stoves, gas stoves, and fireplace inserts. Founded in 1975 by Duncan Syme and Murray Howell in rural Vermont, the company produced its first Defiant wood-burning stove in response to the energy crisis. The original Defiant Parlor Stove is now in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Vermont Castings moved to a dedicated foundry in Randolph, Vermont in 1979, where it casts iron from recycled American materials including brake rotors.
In 2014, HNI Corporation acquired Vermont Castings Group for approximately $100 million, integrating the brand into its Hearth & Home Technologies subsidiary. HHT is the largest hearth products manufacturer in North America, also owning Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Majestic, Harman, PelPro, and Quadra-Fire. Vermont Castings manufacturing remains in Randolph and Bethel, Vermont. The product lineup spans wood stoves (Defiant, Encore, Intrepid FlexBurn, Dauntless FlexBurn), pellet stoves, gas stoves (Radiance, Stardance), and fireplace inserts, all featuring 100% cast iron construction and FlexBurn catalytic technology.
Qualifying Vermont Castings wood and pellet stoves are eligible for the federal Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit. The credit provides 30% of purchase and installation costs up to a $2,000 annual cap for biomass heating units with thermal efficiency ratings of at least 75%. Vermont Castings occupies the premium segment, known for EPA-certified emissions performance and American-made cast iron quality.
UniColorado Heating & Cooling installs cold-climate heat pumps as primary heating systems for Denver homes, providing automatic, efficient comfort without combustion or fuel storage.
