278 heat pump manufacturers, compared like for like

Small units rate higher than large ones and ductless higher than ducted, so a manufacturer’s raw median mostly reflects which sizes it makes. Instead each model is compared with models of the same size and duct type, and a manufacturer’s score is the average share of those comparable models its models beat: 50 is typical, whatever the mix. Brands are grouped under the company that owns them (Bryant and Payne under Carrier, Amana and Goodman under Daikin). Only manufacturers with a QMID on file are ranked, once at least 10 of their models are scored on a rating.
