Is this heat pump brand any good?

We score each brand by how its heat pumps compare with similar ones: the same size and the same type. A score of 50% is average. Brands owned by one company count together, so Bryant and Payne are scored with Carrier, and Amana and Goodman with Daikin.

Covers older R-410A heat pumps, no longer installed new. See models sold today · Updated

Average (50%)

Scored brands have a QMID (the manufacturer ID the federal 25C tax credit needs) and at least 10 models with every rating. The score averages heating and cooling. Source: AHRI directory, NEEP, IRS QMID list.

How the score works

Like for like

A brand that sells mostly small mini-splits would win on raw numbers against one that sells big central systems, because small units rate higher. So each model is compared only with similar heat pumps, and a brand’s score is how many of those its typical model beats.

What the words mean

  • Well above average60% or more
  • Above average55% to 60%
  • About average45% to 55%
  • Below average40% to 45%
  • Well below averageUnder 40%

A score says how a brand’s range compares, not how one model will do in your home. Installation quality and sizing matter as much as the brand, and brands near average still sell excellent models.

Brands we don’t score

These brands have no QMID on file, or too few rated models. Their models still appear everywhere else.
