Check a heat pump’s certified ratings

Type the outdoor unit’s model number from its nameplate, or the AHRI reference number from your quote. You will see its ratings, how it compares with others of its size, and the rebate standards it meets.

Covers heat pumps sold new today (R-454B and R-32 refrigerant). See older R-410A models · Updated

Partial model numbers work. AHRI numbers find the pairing listed for each model.

Cold-climate pick?

Not a pick. No certified heating output at 5°F, so it cannot show it keeps 70% of its heat.

Only units that keep at least 70% of their heat at 5°F, ranked on heat kept, efficiency at 5°F and seasonal efficiency (HSPF2), against units their size.

All-around score

Not scored. No Capacity retention at 5°F rating; all five ratings are needed.

Balances heating (5°F output and efficiency, HSPF2) and cooling (SEER2, EER2), each rating against units their size.

Rebate standards

A model meets a standard when at least one of its certified pairings does. Programs can have other rules too.

These are certified test ratings, not a recommendation for your home. The right size comes from a load calculation by a contractor.

Side by side with another model

Only models of the same size class (ducted, up to 1.5 tons) can be compared, so their numbers mean the same thing.

What size is my system?

Tons and Btu

A heat pump’s size is its rated cooling output, in Btu per hour. Installers talk in tons: one ton is 12,000 Btu per hour, so a 3-ton unit is about 36,000.

Where to find yours: the nameplate sticker on the outdoor unit lists the model number. Many model numbers include the size in thousands of Btu, such as 24 (2 tons), 36 (3 tons) or 48 (4 tons). Your quote or AHRI certificate also lists it. Look up a model number
